What type of generator should I choose?
Let's look at the two main types of generators:
Conventional generator – The oldest type of generator. A steel frame around the engine, a visible motor and a sound somewhat like a gas-powered lawn mower. In English this type is called Frame Type because of its robust frame. The technology is simple and the main function is to deliver the right amount of watts at a good price.
Because this category doesn't produce pure sine, it's not suitable for powering sensitive equipment or home electronics. Rule of thumb: if the load is typical in a workshop or makes a lot of noise, it's fine to plug into this type of generator.
Inverter generator – The modern generator. The inverter generator has been around for about 10 years and was created because modern equipment no longer worked on classic generators. It produces pure sine — the same kind of power you get from a wall outlet at home. So essentially anything you normally plug in at home or work will function correctly.
Inverter generators also use newer technology, making them significantly quieter, more fuel-efficient and feature-rich. Most have an ECO function that adjusts engine speed to load demand.
What happens if I connect a load to a generator that doesn't produce pure sine?
Not a day goes by without questions about whether something can be plugged into a generator without pure sine. Unfortunately, that's impossible to answer until you test — but three things can happen:
- The load works as intended. This mostly applies to "garage-type" equipment. Some sensitive equipment also happens to work, but we don't recommend testing.
- The load behaves strangely. The microwave lights up and rotates but doesn't heat. Lamps flicker. The vacuum surges. The sound system hums. The modified sine wave — the stepped wave — disrupts.
- The load breaks. Unfortunately not uncommon. Chargers are usually first to go, but modified sine has also damaged computers, phones and kitchen equipment.
Summary: an inverter generator is always safer if you're unsure. They're also smaller, lighter and always quieter — but come at a higher price.
How do I choose the right size generator?
Pick the right watts
All generators deliver a certain wattage, and that's what people usually mean when they talk about size. Rule of thumb: pick a generator that delivers about 20% more than your need.
How do you know your need in watts? On all electronic equipment there's a small "label" with the info:
- Watt – If it says watt, you have the number you need.
- Input Ampere / A – Multiply by 230 (we have 230V outlets). Example: 2 A × 230 = 460 W.
Running several things simultaneously? Add their needs together and add ~20%. If they don't run at the same time, size for the heaviest one.
Starting current and continuous power
All generators have both a starting power and a continuous power. Most generators in the world are rated by starting power — but you should size for continuous power.
Some electrical products draw much more current at startup — fridges, compressors, welders. Large inductive loads can draw 3–5× more at start than their continuous power.
